ST JOHN DAMASCENE ON HOLY IMAGES
( πρὸς τοὺς διαβάλλοντας τᾶς ἁγίας εἰκόνας)
FOLLOWED BY THREE SERMONS ON THE ASSUMPTION
( κοίμησις)
[Taken from here]
TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL GREEK
BY MARY H. ALLIES
London
THOMAS BAKER
1 SOHO SQUARE, W.
1898
Imprimatur
Herbertus Cardinalis Vaughan
Archiepiscopus Westmonasteriensis
Die 12 Augusti 1898
TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE
A Treatise on Images will not be out of place in a public, which is confusing the making of images with the making of idols. A great Christian of the eighth century found himself called upon to face an imperial Iconoclast. He would willingly have remained silent, but he would not bury his talent of eloquence. He brought it forth and witnessed to the teaching of the Church in language which present ‘exciting scenes’ in Anglican churches brings home in the most forcible way. Our English image breakers are in the camp of Leo the Isaurian, who in the eighth century waged war against holy images, on the plausible pretext that they withdrew honour from God. The seventh General Council condemned his assault, and it determined the different kinds of worship, using the Greek terms of latreia and douleia. The special champion of holy Images is St John Damascene, whose treatise is now published for the first time in English. Every article in the creed has its special defender. St John Damascene proclaims the Communion of Saints and the honour of God through His chosen and favoured servants. No part of Catholic belief is a vain word, nor can the true children of the Church say with their lips what they do not hold in their hearts. I believe in the Communion of Saints follows upon I believe in God, so that the enemies of the Saints are the enemies of God. This is the doctrine which St John Damascene traces back to the eternal ages before time was, in the divine ἐικων of the Father in the Person of the Son. God, the Son, is the Image by essence, and then He becomes a visible image or form in time, clothed in flesh and blood, showing us by His own example that our worship of God is through corporeal things. Again and again the Saint repeats that as we must not make an image of the Invisible God, so neither must we refuse to look upon the Son, His Image, first in eternity, and then Incarnate.
What are the consequences of rejecting divinely appointed images? Hopeless and heart-destroying doubt caused by the undue exaltation of humanity: in other words, creature, instead of divine, worship. We are so constituted that images we must have: our minds cannot reach God’s throne without the help of corporeal things. Agnosticism has said it. We cannot love what we do not know, and is not God unknowable? Halting formularies say it when they point to matter, which God has glorified, as inglorious. And halting formularies lead to halting souls, and to the proclamation of the strange device that religious truth is of no consequence so long as men lead good lives.
The sermons on the Assumption were preached by the Saint in or about a.d. 727. According to Alban Butler, he had special reasons for honouring the Mother of God. By her intercession he regained the use of his strong right hand. It was a practical demonstration of Catholic teaching, We reach God most surely through those who love Him best, and thus the Protestant phrase, which expresses a purely Catholic thought ‘straight to God,’ is exemplified in the Communion of Saints. St John’s language about the Θεοτοκη will astonish those who stigmatise the love of her as a ‘Roman corruption.’ The crowning triumph of the Assumption follows justly on the divine maternity. Her body was all pure, because her all holy (παναγία) soul made it the resting-place of our Lord. The Mother is so identified with the Son that her life is part of His. The tomb is not for her, and thus the writer of the eighth century bears full testimony to Catholic tradition.
All believers are at one in wishing to reach God; the question is one of detail. Which is the shortest road? St John Damascene speaks with the Church when he says it is through the glorification of matter in the Person of the Eternal Word. Either give matter its proper place, or take away matter which the Lord Himself has exalted, and we are no longer composite beings, but spirits ill at ease in a material world. Take away the King’s army, and you uncrown the King Himself. Forget His Mother, and with her the connecting link between earth and heaven. Then we may be heathens once more, groping after the unknown God, and our latter state will be more appalling than the heathendom of old, before the light had appeared to illumine earth’s dark places.

The Holy Prelate: Prophecy, Resistance, and the Battle for the Kingship of Christ
In this episode, we explore the prophecies of Our Lady of Good Success, focusing on the foretold emergence of a holy prelate to oppose the tide of apostasy and protect the priesthood. We examine how +Archbishop Lefebvre fulfilled this prophecy, standing firm against the heresies of Vatican II and modernism.
Through his actions, the true Catholic resistance is upheld, and the Social Kingship of Christ is defended.

Not only in France, but also in Italy there is a trend to burn down churches, reveals ProItaliaCristiana (17 February).
On 7 February an incendiary device was thrown through a window of the church of S. Maria dei Servi in Foce, a district of Val Bisagna, Genoa.
On 5 February, an arson attack destroyed a Romanesque chapel in Via Bormani, in Diano Marina, Liguria.
On 2 February, an illegal immigrant set fire to the doors of the church of S. Martino in Greco, in Milan, and fled.
On 26 January, in Scicli, Sicily, the roof of the church of San Matteo was deliberately destroyed.
The same is happening in France (2024: 50 churches), Canada, the United States and Latin America.
The regime's media are not talking about it, on the contrary, they are happy that it is happening, otherwise they would speak out.

Yet another invalid New Mass...
Female Anglican vicar ‘concelebrates’ Mass with new Brazilian archbishop
The recently created Archdiocese of Chapecó in Brazil admitted to an ‘inadvertent violation of liturgical norms’ by having a female Anglican cleric attempt to concelebrate Holy Mass during the installation of its new archbishop.

CHAPECÓ, Brazil (LifeSiteNews) — An Anglican female cleric “concelebrated” Catholic Mass in Brazil recently for the installation of the new Archbishop of Chapecó.
On February 9, Archbishop Odelir José Magri was installed as new ordinary of the recently created Archbishopric of Chapecó in Brazil. Magri, appointed to the see by Pope Francis in November, was joined at the ceremony by a number of Catholic bishops and priests, but also by Vivian Schwanke De Oliveira – a female cleric of the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IEAB)’s Diocese Sul Ocidental.
De Oliveira can be seen prominently throughout the ceremony, and was mentioned by name by Magri during the ceremony as the new archbishop praised the ecumenical nature of the event. She was not the only non-Catholic presence in the sanctuary, appearing to “concelebrate,” but was joined also by another female minister, identified by ACI Prensa as from the Evangelical denomination named the Reborn in Christ Church.
Magri’s welcoming of the ecumenical style of his installation was met with applause from the congregation, as were many introductions made during his homily.
Later during the Mass, De Oliveira queued up with the Catholic clergy to take Holy Communion from the ciboria around the altar, while the congregation were receiving Holy Communion from a number of the concelebrating priests.
The live-stream of the video cuts away just as De Oliveira and the other female minister appear to be about to consume the consecrated host.
The participation of non-Catholic ministers in the Mass in such manner appears to be a clear violation of Catholic Canon Law. Canons 907 and 908 expressly forbid a lay person from offering the prayers of the Eucharist, as well as prohibiting Catholic priests from concelebrating with non-Catholic ministers:
Quote:In the eucharistic celebration deacons and lay persons are not permitted to offer prayers, especially the eucharistic prayer, or to perform actions which are proper to the celebrating priest.
Catholic priests are forbidden to concelebrate the Eucharist with priests or ministers of Churches or ecclesial communities which do not have full communion with the Catholic Church.
De Oliveira’s apparent reception of Holy Communion, an act which would likely have emboldened by the archbishop’s warm welcome of her during the homily, would additionally violate the Church’s Canon Law. Canon 844 states that “Catholic ministers administer the sacraments licitly to Catholic members of the Christian faithful alone, who likewise receive them licitly from Catholic ministers alone.”
That canon admits of certain rare occasions when Catholics can receive certain sacraments from non-Catholic ministers whose sacraments – and thus orders – are valid. However, none of these are met by De Oliveira’s circumstances.
When questioned about De Oliveira’s participation, the Archdiocese of Chapecó issued a response, stating that they had already informed the papal nuncio to Brazil about the event, and described it as an “isolated incident of inadvertent violation of liturgical norms.” The letter read:
Quote:In reference to what happened during the Solemn Mass of Installation of the Archdiocese of Chapecó and my inauguration as Metropolitan Archbishop, we inform you that we have already communicated to the Apostolic Nunciature in Brazil about the circumstances of this isolated incident of inadvertent violation of liturgical norms.
We renew our commitment to doctrinal orthodoxy and liturgical orthopraxia, and will make efforts to avoid future errors.
We implore divine blessings upon our Particular Church as we continue united in the evangelizing mission.
In recent decades, a heavy focus has been placed upon ecumenism by the Catholic Church and notably so by Pope Francis, who has made it a prominent feature of his nearly 12-year pontificate.
On a number of occasions he has joined ecumenical leaders at religious ceremonies, sometimes giving joint blessings with them at the end of such events, including this past January.
In contrast to the current prevailing style of ecumenism, Vatican’s 1949 decree from the Holy Office instructed bishops charged with promoting true ecumenism to draw souls to the Church, and that they must always teach the fullness of the Church’s priority.
It stated: “By no means is it permitted to pass over in silence or to veil in ambiguous terms the Catholic truth regarding the nature and way of justification, the constitution of the Church, the primacy of jurisdiction of the Roman Pontiff, and the only true union by the return of the dissidents to the one true Church of Christ.”
The Catholic Church notes that it is possible for those remaining outside the Church “through no grave fault of their own” and who are somehow unaware that the Church is the true Church to still be saved “by making use of the graces which God gives them.” However, salvation in these cases of “invincible ignorance” is not found through other churches but is through the Catholic Church as the channel of grace, as taught by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Archbishop Lefebvre: The Modernists In Rome Cannot Be Trusted
Part I
In this episode, titled "Archbishop Lefebvre: The Modernists in Rome Cannot Be Trusted [Part 1]", we present a collection of uncompromising quotes from Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. These quotes expose the treachery of the modernists in Rome, who continue to promote the errors of Vatican II while undermining the true Catholic Faith. Lefebvre unequivocally condemns the false compromises made by those who seek to appease the conciliar church, warning that such concessions ultimately lead to the acceptance of heretical ideas and the erosion of Tradition. His firm stance is clear: there can be no cooperation with Rome as long as it remains in apostasy, rejecting the true mission of the Church and the Kingship of Christ. These quotes serve as a stark reminder that fidelity to the Catholic Faith demands uncompromising resistance to the modernist agenda that seeks to destroy it.

Pope Francis has double pneumonia, Vatican announces
The latest update from the Vatican about Pope Francis' health reveals that his condition has deteriorated yet again, now presenting with double pneumonia.

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis has double pneumonia requiring “complex” medical care in the hospital, the Holy See Press Office announced this evening.
In a statement issued to the Vatican press corps around 7:30 pm tonight, the press office director stated that Francis’ health situation had deteriorated once again, following his Friday admission to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital:
Quote:The laboratory tests, chest X-ray and clinical conditions of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture.
The polymicrobial infection, which arose in a context of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and which required the use of cortisone and antibiotic therapy, makes the therapeutic treatment more complex.
The chest CAT scan that the Holy Father underwent this afternoon, prescribed by the Vatican health team and the medical team of the “A. Gemelli” Polyclinic Foundation, showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further drug therapy.
Nevertheless, Pope Francis is in a good mood.
This morning he received the Eucharist and, during the day, he alternated rest with prayer and reading texts. He is grateful for the closeness he feels at this moment and asks, with gratitude, that people continue to pray for him.
Already missing a large part of one lung as a result of illness in his early 20s, Francis has always been particularly susceptible to winter colds affecting his breathing capability.
Francis had been admitted to hospital Friday with a fever and with bronchitis, though the Holy See Press Office told journalists Saturday evening that the fever had apparently subsided, and medical personnel reportedly stated that he was showing “improvement in some values.”
On Sunday evening his condition was declared “stationary,” but then on Monday the press office announced it had worsened, and that “all the investigations carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospital stay.”
Earlier today, his audiences were again cancelled, this time up to the end of Sunday, February 23.
Should he remain in hospital until then, then it would indeed be the longest hospitalization of his pontificate. He was in hospital for less than five days in the spring of 2023 and then in June 2023 for 9 days. During the latter occasion, he underwent surgery for an “incarcerated incisional hernia,” which the Holy See Press Office described as a necessary procedure, but not an emergency.
This story is developing…
