There is a very special reason, why, under the title of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Mother of God should be now worshipped; for under that title She meets a special need. That need is the want of Good Counsel in the world. The devotion is, as the devotion to Jesus Christ in His Sacred Heart, and as the devotion to St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, a devotion reserved for the wants of the faithful in the dangerous days coming towards the end of time. Devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel is needed in like manner: for if it be true that to Her alone is reserved the power of crushing all heresies throughout the whole world and in all time, never was it more necessary to manifest that great power than in these days when all the streams of past error and malice unite with newer streams more deadly and wide-spread, to form a vast deluge of falsehood and error, meant by its author and his agents to wash out Christianity from the minds of men. It is the cunning of the infernal serpent, which has planned all this and made it universal. It is his power and sleepless astuteness which nurture and direct it. It is, for it must be Mary, therefore, Who is destined to crush him--to crush his head, to leave not one of his machinations disentangled and obliterated until all are effaced by Her might. It is Hers to give the world that Wisdom, and Counsel, and strength necessary for its last and most terrible combat. By her Most Pure, Virginal, and Maternal Dignity, by the immensity of Her merit and Her share in the work of Our Redemption, She must end in crushing to atoms the head of that deadly enemy of God and man, who desires to strangle Her Child in the souls of those for whom that Child died upon Calvary. --pages 509

God, the Son, Redeemer of the world, *
God, the Holy Ghost, *
Holy Trinity, one God, *
Living Bread, that camest down from heaven, *
Hidden God and Saviour, *
Wheat of the elect, *
Wine of which virgins are the fruit, *
Bread of fatness and royal dainties, *
Perpetual Sacrifice, *
Clean Oblation, *
Lamb without spot, *
Most pure Feast, *
Food of Angels, *
Memorial of the wonders of God, *
Supersubstantial Bread, *
Sacrament of piety, *
Bond of unity and charity, *
Priest and Victim, *
Offerer and Oblation, *
Viaticum of those who die in the Lord, *
Pledge of future glory, *
We sinners: Beseech Thee to hear us.
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to preserve and increase our faith, reverence and devotion toward this admirable Sacrament, We beseech Thee, hear us. ***
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to conduct us, through a true confession of our sins, to frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist, ***
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to impart to us the precious and heavenly fruits of this most Holy Sacrament, ***
That Thou wouldst confirm us in Thy grace, ***
That Thou wouldst preserve us from all snares of the enemy, ***
That at the hour of death Thou wouidst strengthen and defend us by this heavenly Viaticum, ***
Jesus, overwhelmed with sadness, reduced to agony, and submerged in a sea of sorrow, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, betrayed by a traitor-apostle and sold at a low price, like a slave, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, giving a loving kiss to the traitor Judas, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, dragged by a rope through the streets of Jerusalem, and overwhelmed with curses, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, unjustly accused and condemned, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, overwhelmed with insults, spat upon, and buffeted, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, clothed in a robe of ignominy and treated as a madman at Herod’s court, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, Thy flesh torn with scourges, and Thy blood flowing plentifully, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, crowned with sharp thorns, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, placed on a parallel with Barabbas, who was preferred to Thee, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, given over to Thine enemies by Pilate, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, exhausted with suffering and bending beneath the burden of Thy cross, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, man of sorrows, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, obedient unto death, even unto the death of the cross, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, praying for Thy executioners, and pleading for them with Thy Father, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, for our redemption sacrificing Thine honor and Thy life, Have mercy on us.
Jesus, expiring on the cross out of love for us, Have mercy on us.

This Litany of the Holy Face of Jesus, printed below, along with the Golden Arrow prayer, is an important part of Devotion to our Lord in His Holy Face. It has been attributed to Sister Mary of St. Peter, a Carmelite Nun pictured above, to whom Jesus revealed his ardent desire for this Devotion in reparation for blasphemies against God and the profanation of Sunday. (This offense involves people engaging unnecessarily in commerce and other such labors and chores on Sunday, a day meant for rest and reflection on God.)

Jesus once told Sister Mary in one of His many revelations to her “Oh, if you only knew what great merit you acquire by saying even once 'Admirable is the name of God' in a spirit of reparation for blasphemy!” This short prayer of reparation probably gladdens Our Lord’s heart indeed!

Sister Mary showed great love in honoring Jesus' requests to further the adoption of the Holy Face devotion. One of her associates, Ven. Leo Dupont himself played a key role in spreading this devotion after Sister’s death in 1848. Our Lord Himself spoke of His Holy Face and the need for reparation, as mentioned above, a number of times in the 1840’s, and indeed, dictated the Golden Arrow prayer to her in 1843!

This Litany below is inspiring in the way Sister Mary lovingly takes us through Jesus' life in this prayer, with special detail as to how His Face appeared during His Passion.
