We invite the members and faithful of the Society to offer their prayers for the good outcome of this meeting.
"So let us be confident, let us not be unprepared, let us not be outflanked, let us be wise, vigilant, fighting against those who are trying to tear the faith out of our souls and morality out of our hearts, so that we may remain Catholics, remain united to the Blessed Virgin Mary, remain united to the Roman Catholic Church, remain faithful children of the Church."- Abp. Last summer, Fr Davide Pagliarani, the superior of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, wrote to the Holy Father to request an audience, he said on Fsspx.news on February 5.
Having received no reply, he wrote another letter a few months later: “I mentioned our doctrinal disagreements, but also our sincere desire to serve the Catholic Church tirelessly, for we are servants of the Church despite our canonically unrecognized status.”
In January, he received a response from Cardinal Tucho Fernández: “Unfortunately, it does not take our proposal into account in any way, nor does it offer anything that responds to our requests,” Fr Pagliarani comments, revealing what his proposal had entailed. He had asked the Holy See “to be allowed to continue in our exceptional situation temporarily”.
"It seems to me that such a proposal is both realistic and reasonable, and that it could be approved by the Holy Father."
The episcopal consecrations are “an extreme means, proportionate to a real and equally extreme necessity” as the two bishops of the society grow older: “Souls need priests. And to have priests, bishops are required, not influencers.”
He adds that Leo XIV is determined to preserve the line of Francis as an irreversible path for the entire Church. Francis imposed “catastrophic decisions on the entire Church, such as authorizing Communion for the divorced and remarried or the blessing of same-sex couples”.
Cardinal Víctor “Tucho” Fernández will receive Fr. Davide Pagliarani, the Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith next week. He announced this on the Substack.com account 'The Pillar' on 4 February.
Just two days ago, the FSSPX published their plans to consecrate new bishops on July 1 without a papal mandate. Father Pagliarani said that this decision was made after he requested an audience with Pope Leo XIV in August 2025, and after he recently received a letter from the Vatican which did not respond to their requests in any way.
Cardinal Fernández explained that the letter referred to by Fr Pagliarani was sent by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
It “merely responded negatively to the possibility of proceeding now with new episcopal ordinations.”
“We have been exchanging letters in recent times. Next week I will meet with Fr. Pagliarani in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to try and find a fruitful path of dialogue,” Fernández added.
According to ' The Pillar', there were recent conversations that also involved the two FSSPX bishops, Bernard Fellay and Alfonso de Galarreta, and on the Vatican side, Cardinal Kurt Koch, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and Archbishop Guido Pozzo, the former secretary of the now-defunct Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.
